BLOODS ART MONGER

The Die is Cast
This week I met the very talented and hugely passionate Gareth Leake – definitely a Bloods Artist: He is one of those rare individuals who doesn’t simply talk the talk. The self taught artist and sculptor found himself at a crossroads in his life a year ago and throwing caution to the wind cleared the children’s clobber from the garage and created his first studio.
During this time, whilst holding down a ‘day job’ he began a series of mesmerizing work inspired by his previous enthusiasm for massage and shiatsu. Going on to explain that he sculpts from touch, using his fingers as eyes is clearly then, no bold bravado.
Working in wood, clay, resin and plaster Gareth is as prolific as he is driven – even reaching for the proverbial envelope to explain a design to me whilst we spoke. After recently winning the Bristol Guild prize for his sculpture, Gareth’s course appears most definitely ‘cast’.
Bloods Art Monger is delighted to announce that his work will shortly be presented on the website.

Prize-winning sculptor brings work to gallery
Fresh and exciting work from a new range of artists is now on show at A2 gallery in Wells. Prize-winning sculptor Gareth Leake creates remarkably realistic life size torsos in wood and clay and casts in plaster and resin.
Following his success at the Bath Society of Arts exhibition where he was awarded the Bristol Guild Prize he is now showing commercially and has chosen A2 gallery in Wells to represent him.
Unusually Gareth is self taught and by manufacturing his own moulds and casting in plaster or resin at his workshops near Bath he retains control of the whole sculpture process from inception to completed piece.
Gareth said: "I have had a life-long interest in anatomy and bodywork therapies, and I've studied a variety of massage techniques and Shiatsu.
"In my sculpture, I draw from my practical 'hands on' experience of treating muscular and skeletal issues, and from my detailed knowledge of anatomy.
"I sculpt mainly from touch, using my fingers as eyes."
